Michael Fitts began his tenure as the 15th president of Tulane University on Tuesday. Fitts began his first day by greeting the Tulane community in an email to students.

“The first word I said when I was introduced to the Tulane University community back in February was, ‘Wow,’” Fitts said.  “I was so moved by your enthusiasm, warmth, energy and support, that this small palindrome was the most appropriate response I could give. Now that the first day of my term as Tulane’s 15th president has arrived, I can only repeat it. Wow, am I glad to be here!”

Fitts, the former dean of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, takes over for former President Scott Cowen, who completed his final day as president on Monday. In his final Tulane Talk message, Cowen thanked the Tulane community and reflected on the memories of his tenure.

We will truly miss our regular interactions and being a part of your lives,” Cowen said. “Fortunately, we have 16 wonderful years of memories and experiences to sustain us in the years ahead.”

Cowen said he is excited for what Fitts will bring to Tulane.

“We are all very fortunate to have Michael Fitts as our 15th president,” Cowen said. “I wish Mike much success in his tenure, and I know you all join Margie and me in welcoming him and his family to the extraordinary, worldwide Tulane community.”

Fitts said he plans to meet with members of the community and begin preparations for the start of the new academic year in August.

“There is a lot to do but I already know that we have the best students, faculty and staff to achieve all of our goals,” Fitts said. “I have long admired the Tulane community from afar for its dedication and grit. I can’t tell you how much I am now looking forward to serving as your president.”
